Counseling program

The goal of the school counseling program at Essex High School is to enhance academics, provide career awareness, develop employment readiness, encourage self-awareness, foster interpersonal communication skills, and teach life success skills for all students.

School Counseling Program Components:

  • Counseling – school counselors provide short-term individual and group counseling services to support students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development.
  • The School Counseling Curriculum – school counselors teach students and parents important information and skills needed for healthy educational, career, and personal development and resiliency.
  • Academic Advising – school counselors provide information and counseling to help students plan appropriate high school courses and extracurricular activities.
  • College and Career Counseling – school counselors help students to develop and implement post-secondary plans.
  • Coordination and Referral – school counselors serve as coordinators and referral agents to link people and resources in the school and community for the fullest academic and personal development of students.
  • Consultation – school counselors serve as consultants, sharing professional expertise with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and other community members – within the confines of ethical and legal boundaries – for the benefit of students.
  • Student Information Management – school counselors and staff gather, evaluate, interpret, and disseminate information – within the confines of the laws of rights to privacy – to meet the needs of students, the school, and the community.
  • Professional Development – school counselors establish, maintain, and expand the knowledge, skills, and competencies that lead to their personal and professional growth and development.
  • Program Management – school counselors and the school counseling director develop the processes and procedures for planning, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive program of school counseling services.
  • Program Limitations – EHS counselors do not testify in child custody matters or provide intensive, long-term counseling.
